What is hard water?

Hard water contains fine sediments of dissolved rock; usually calcium, iron and magnesium. About half of the American population has moderate to very hard water, a range usually defined as 60 to 180 ppm (parts per million) of dissolved minerals. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, average water hardness is 121 ppm, a level found in about 85 percent of America’s water supply.

Water hardness can cancel out the cleansing properties of your laundry detergents and cause fabrics to deteriorate faster. Mineral sediments in water also encourage formation of sink and bathtub rings, make hair stiff and dull, and leave spots on glassware and other tableware. Given sufficient time, hard water eventually clogs plumbing with scale deposits; these deposits also form on the heating surfaces of water heaters, reducing efficiency and increasing operating costs. And to make matters worse, operating an electric heating element or gas burner longer naturally shortens the working life of these components—adding to the many costs of hard water.

So how do we get soft water?

Completely soft water, in other words, water with zero dissolved mineral solids, is found in the natural environment only in rainfall. However, it is possible to use technology to remove mineral solids from water. Modern water conditioning appliances use electricity and common salt to create a chemical reaction that removes aggressive mineral sediments from a water supply.
